Change Your SSA Gender Marker in Trinidad

We've heard some reports of patients having problems getting their gender marker changed - once they get back home. The SSA policy for gender change is fairly clear, but a lot depends on locale, individual office policies, and even the individual clerk or agent handling the matter. Most of the issues seem to have to do with the Surgical Declaration letter being questioned - wrong format, wrong content, notarized or not, etc.

Several Trinidad alumni (Billie, Nancy, and Jessica, thanks!) have suggested that if you are spending a day or two in Trinidad after your surgery, you can visit the Trinidad office of the Social Security Administration to get your official gender change. The folks in Trinidad know how to deal with this stuff; reportedly the agents are happy to see us and happy for us.

The local office of the Social Security Administration is located:

  • Social Security • 207 East Main Street • Trinidad, CO 81082
  • (719) 846-6556 • (800) 772-1213 • TTY (719) 846-9929
  • Hours: Mon - Fri: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. (Except Federal Holidays)

If you are doing your name change (as well as your gender change) you will need to fill out form SS-5. You will need to bring along:

      • Your legal name change decree (if doing the name change)
      • Government Issued Photo ID (e.g. - Drivers License / Passport)
      • Your surgical declaration letter from Dr. Bowers
      • Your social security card
      • (optional) Utility Bill with your name and address (proof of residence)
      • (mandatory) A smile!
