Clitoroplasty/Clitoral Reduction

History

Clitoroplasty/clitoral reduction is performed for clitoral hypertrophy–an enlarged and lengthened clitoris due to exposure to androgens (male hormones). Although all women have testosterone (and men, estrogen), the levels of testosterone are much lower in women (as estrogen is in males). There are congenital conditions (21-hydroxylase deficiency, 3-Beta Dehydrogenase, etc) or exogenous testosterone administration that can cause the clitoris to enlarge. This change is permanent unless surgically reduced. For those who find this enlargement problematic, clitoroplasty is indicated. Pediatric surgeons are often presented with these cases, many unfamiliar with modern techniques of genital reassignment. Dr. Bowers applies principles of gender surgery to allow a cosmetic and functional reduction for such patients.

Procedure

The procedure is done as an outpatient at the San Mateo Surgery Center. Cost is usually covered by insurance. The procedure takes approximately 1.5 hours and recovery is within 4 weeks normally. Resumption of sexual activity is possible within 4-6 weeks.

Pain is minimal after 24 hours.  The final appearance after swelling and bruising have reduced can take up to 6 months. Patients must have someone with them for the first 24 hours after surgery. Sensation of the clitoris should remain completely intact after surgical reduction.

Complications

Complications are few, related mainly to bruising, healing and pain in the region. Scarring is possible although rarely seen. The procedure, due to its nature, is associated with extremely high rates of satisfaction. The procedure is collaborative between patient and doctor. Tell us what bothers you and we can do a generally good job of matching hopes with expectations. Patients are given Dr. Bowers cell phone number following surgery. We want you to do well!
